Coming to Our Senses

OPENING PRAYER:

Lord, as we explore Your Word today, open our eyes to the moments when we need to come to our senses and return to You. May Your Spirit lead us in humility and repentance. Amen.

READ: Luke 15:17-19 (NIV)

"When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.'"

This turning point in the parable marks the beginning of the son's journey back home. It is a moment of realization and repentance, where he acknowledges his mistakes and decides to return to his father.

Luke 15:17-19 (NIV):

REFLECT:

The phrase "when he came to his senses" is a powerful moment in the parable. It signifies a turning point, a moment of clarity where the prodigal son recognizes the reality of his situation and the need to return home. This is a moment of humility and repentance, where he acknowledges his mistakes and seeks forgiveness.

Pastor Carter’s message, he emphasizes the importance of allowing our children to come to their own realizations. This can be difficult, as we often want to guide them to the right conclusions. However, true change comes from within, when they come to their senses and decide to return to the path of righteousness.

The cultural context of the story adds depth to this moment. In Jewish culture, the son's actions would have been seen as a grave dishonor to his family. Yet, it is in this place of shame and desperation that he finds the courage to return home. This is a reminder that no matter how far we have strayed, we can always return to God.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will ask one open-ended question with a kid in my life, especially when they've made a mistake.

It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does matter. One thoughtful question can open the door to a meaningful conversation and remind a kid that they are seen, loved, and not alone. To help you with that, we’ve created a list of simple, open-ended conversation starters you can use with the kids and students in your life. You can find them in the Pathway app or at pathwaychurch.com/parentresources

CLOSING PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the moments when we come to our senses and turn back to You. Help us to recognize these moments in our lives and to respond with humility and repentance. Guide us on the path of righteousness. Amen.
