The Family Fortress
OPENING PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, open our hearts to understand the true essence of family as You designed it. May Your Spirit guide us to see beyond our own walls and embrace the broader family You have given us in Christ. Amen.
"Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’"
REFLECT:
In the message, the pastor shared a poignant story about his brother, who instinctively protected him. This story illustrates a fundamental truth about family: it is a fortress where protection and love are paramount. The pastor emphasized that family is not just about blood relations but extends to those we choose to protect and care for, reflecting the heart of God’s kingdom.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 25 remind us that the kingdom of God is built on acts of love and service to the least of these. The disciples, much like us, needed to understand that God's kingdom is not about power or status but about serving others. The pastor challenged us to expand our definition of family to include those who are vulnerable and in need, just as Jesus did.
Consider the foster care crisis mentioned in the message. Many children find themselves in need of a family fortress, a place where they are loved and protected. The pastor urged us to see these children as part of our extended family, deserving of the same care and protection we offer our own.
As you reflect on this, ask yourself: Who is God calling you to protect and care for? How can you extend your family fortress to include those who are vulnerable? Let the love of Christ compel you to act, knowing that when you serve the least of these, you are serving Him.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will defend the vulnerable with my time or resources. Pathway partners with CarePortal to help meet the needs of those in crisis in our community. Our Foster Care Awareness website (pathwaychurch.com/fostercare) has more info on how you can help.
If you would like to learn more about other ways you can serve, like babysitting, providing temporary respite, what it takes to be a licensed foster family, or helping with food or prayer, Pathway Church will be hosting an informational meeting on August 17, 6:00pm at the Westlink Campus. This is a no pressure meeting to discover how everyone can play a part in supporting families. You can find out more by clicking here.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Lord, thank You for the family You have given us in Christ. Help us to extend our love and protection to those who need it most. May our actions reflect Your heart and bring glory to Your name. Amen.
